How much electricity does a monobloc use? Calculating the energy costs of a cold room

The purchase price is only part of the cost – over several years of use it is energy that decides what your refrigeration really costs. We explain what drives a monobloc's electricity consumption and how to calculate it before you buy.

What does energy consumption depend on?

A monobloc's consumption is not fixed – it depends on several factors worth knowing when selecting a unit:

  • the volume and insulation of the room – the larger and less well insulated, the more energy,
  • the temperature range – freezing (LT) uses noticeably more than chilling (MT),
  • the ambient temperature – in hot weather the system works harder,
  • how often the door is opened and the heat load of the goods,
  • the class of components – EC fans and inverter compressors cut consumption significantly.

How do I estimate the annual cost?

A simplified calculation: the unit's average power draw (kW) × the estimated compressor run time per day (h) × 365 days × the price of electricity per kWh. The compressor does not run non-stop – it cycles, so what matters is the actual run time, not the peak power.

That is why two units of similar capacity can produce different bills – what decides is efficiency and how long they have to run to hold the temperature. A well-sized monobloc with some capacity in reserve runs for less time and, as a result, uses less.

How to genuinely lower the bills

The biggest savings come from: sizing the capacity correctly for the room, energy-efficient components (EC fans, inverter), good insulation and well-sealed doors, and – in buildings with many units – heat recovery via the Waterloop system.

Frequently asked questions

Does a more powerful monobloc use more electricity?

Not necessarily. A unit with capacity in reserve reaches temperature faster and runs for less time, which can be more economical than a weaker unit running constantly. What counts is matching the unit to the room, not raw capacity.

How much does a freezer monobloc use compared with a chiller?

Freezing (LT) means holding a much lower temperature, so it uses noticeably more energy than chilling (MT) – for the same room the difference can be substantial.

Is an inverter compressor worth it?

In most applications yes – it matches output smoothly to demand, reduces on/off cycling and lowers both energy use and noise. We will help you assess the payback in your case.
